A Journey of Love and Art: From Oil Painting to Abstract Expressionism

Doris and her husband shared a lifelong journey of love and mutual support, dedicated to each other's passions. Her husband, a true artist, was among the first graduates of MassArt. He understood the challenges of sustaining a life solely through art and, upon meeting Doris, devoted himself to supporting her creative journey so she wouldn?t have to carry that burden alone. Together, they built studios, created art, and explored the vast world of abstract expressionism.

They studied abstract expressionism at Mo Com's studio in Brookline, working in oil paints and often taking months to see the outcome of each piece. This process of gradual exploration helped shape their evolving language of abstract art. Their journey eventually led to a 20-year collaboration with Merrifield Roberts, a boat builder in Bristol, RI, where they crafted large metal and fiberglass sculptures, pushing the boundaries of their art into new forms and mediums.

Doris's husband built three studios for her in Newton, ultimately constructing a massive 30 x 30-foot space with 15-foot walls. In this space, Doris's work grew to fill the scale of the room itself, and she evolved her artistic language to match the grandeur of her surroundings. For over 20 years, they attended the annual Art Expo, where Doris showcased new explorations in her art language each year. After Doris's husband passed the journey of artistic discovery continued until 2006 when the Newton studios were then consolidated into a single location at 1 Sandy Knoll Drive in Hudson.

The Laura Knott Gallery

One of Doris's early walk-through art projects was hosted on dlweiner.com, built in 1995 as one of the first web-based art gallery experiments using HTML1. This virtual gallery showcases Doris's pioneering work in interactive art spaces.

For over 40 years, Doris Weiner, founder of Sandy Knoll Works, created WOW through her unique integration of color, art, and technology. She explored art from multiple perspectives, creating pure abstract works, interactive furniture, and functional art. Sandy Knoll Works became a unique family story, where Doris and her son, Alan, continued producing art that engages and inspires.

The Journey from Sandy Knoll Works to Perry County

Now, Doris's legacy continues in Perry County, where a new studio is being built to mirror her original workspace. This large, open space will house her tools, artwork, and an extensive six-bookcase library of abstract art. This space, like the studios her husband built for her, will be a place for creative exploration and discovery, honoring the journey they shared and their commitment to each other's bliss.
